Econ Group Construction and Development Ltd. is a North Vancouver-based, medium sized design-build firm in its 16th year of business. Our in-house design team is European trained and our core building crews are great at what they do. We believe that the backbone of any successful project is excellent, friendly communication and superior listening skills.
We design and build modern, energy efficient homes, and have been building to the Passive House standard for a decade (longer than any builder in the Lower Mainland). We also consult and educate within our industry, to government, and to public at large as to the proven performance benefits of Passive House theory and its correct application.
Passive Houses consume up to 90% less energy used within a home built to Vancouver code. With the list of municipalities committing to greener practices and even carbon-neutrality, we see Passive as being the easiest and smartest platform for achieving a Net Zero future. And frankly we really love working with clients who are thinking forward.
“I visit Econ’s job sites knowing they’ll always teach me something new.”
– Local Municipal Building Inspector
Our focus on modern, quality architecture, designed especially to the International Passive House Standard, coupled with our decade of building to the standard has proven to us that an integrated planning approach is key for the success and affordability of a construction project. Our architecturally trained staff is uniquely able to assist during design and then to transition seamlessly into the construction phase. This holistic design-build approach guarantees quality and efficiency: both key elements for an energy-efficient, modern home.
We have been building, renovating and retrofitting homes together since 2001, always aiming toward modern aesthetic and energy efficiency. In 2006 we began building to the Passive House Standard and subsequently received the formal training for Passive Certification. While we focus our work within Vancouver and the North Shore, our past work in the Fraser Valley, and on Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, Sunshine Coast, in Whistler and beyond means we are always open to considering any stimulating, modern projects farther afield.
With our unique positioning as the very first and most experienced Passive House builder in the Greater Vancouver Area, we are able to offer our consulting services to developers and municipalities pursuing Passive House methodologies and/or certification. In the role of Passive House Consultant, we can educate your team top to bottom via integrated planning team education sessions, pre-tender and pre-construction sessions, input into your design and planning process (including PHPP modelling), and offer you onsite quality control.
Through both hands-on events and lectures we have helped directly educate hundreds of college students, municipal leaders, inspectors, tradespeople, and curious laypeople about the performance-based benefits of Passive House. As a CanPHI West instructor and Board Member, our Principal, Marcel Studer, has active relationships with teaching Passive at UBC, BCIT, BUILDEX, GVHBA and others. The positive working relationships we have with area building departments have grown out of our strength as a proactive educator.
With 28 years of construction experience Michael’s time-tested expertise lies within project management and logistics. Michael’s warm communication style and thorough knowledge of the industry’s innovations and products makes him the perfect consultant for the truly holistic process of building your home.
